NHS Health Check

What is a NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is a free health check-up of your overall health for people aged 40 - 74. It's designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia.

I haven’t had an NHS Health Check before, am I eligible?

If you’re aged 40 – 74 and you haven’t had a stroke or you don’t already have heart disease, diabetes or kidney disease you should have an NHS Health Check every 5 years.

Locally our GP surgeries offer their patients an NHS Health Check – please speak to your GP practice if you are eligible and have not yet had an invitation to attend.

If you are not registered with a practice (or your practice does not offer them) you can get an NHS Health Check through our community provider see: http://buckinghamshire.nhshealthchecks.com/

What happens at a NHS Health Check?

It will take about 20-30 minutes. During the check your GP, Nurse or health care assistant will:

  • Ask simple questions about medication and family history
  • Record your height, weight, age, sex and ethnicity
  • Take your blood pressure
  • Do a simple blood test
  • Calculate your risk of developing cardiovascular disease
  • Receive some personalised lifestyle advice. This could include talking about diet, physical activity, losing weight or giving up smoking.

I’ve already had an NHS Health Check and want to know more about making changes to my lifestyle.
