National Walking Month

This May, National Walking Month provides us with a great opportunity to kick start increasing our activity levels. Run by Living Streets, this year we are all being encouraged to walk for 20 minutes each day.  Walking is free and a good way to help you be healthier.

The NHS gives us some ideas to help us incorporate more walking into our daily routine.

Make walking a habit by:

  • Walking all or part of the way to work

  • Parking a bit further away from your destination so you walk the rest of the way.

  • Going for a walk each evening

  • Meeting for a regular walk with a friend

  • Walking instead of driving for short journeys

  • Walking the kids to school

Listen to music as you walk to take your mind off feeling tired and help set a pace.

Use the Active 10 app to help monitor what you have done.

Add variety to your walks to keep it interesting. There is plenty to see in towns as well as the countryside.

Join a walking group, it’s a great way to meet people and discover new places.

If you are thinking that 20 minutes is too much for you at the moment then set yourself a more realistic goal. Once you feel stronger and more confident you can build up to doing more.

Why not use this month to take a step in the right direction.
