Stress Awareness Month - Community

The theme for this year’s Stress Awareness Month is Community. Relationships with others are really important for us all. Those who have more social contact are less likely to have mental health problems. If people don’t feel connected to others then they can feel isolated, lonely and are at increased risk of depression, anxiety, sleep problems and stress.

Research shows that there are 5 areas you can do to improve your mental wellbeing and help you feel more positive. The first of the ‘5 steps to mental wellbeing’ is ‘Connect with other people.’

Good relationships with other people can:

  • Build feelings of belonging and self worth,

  • Help you to share positive experiences with others,

  • Provide emotional support and help you support others.

The NHS gives us lots of ideas about how to build close relationships with others.

  • if possible, take time each day to be with your family, for example, try arranging a fixed time to eat dinner together,

  • arrange a day out with friends you have not seen for a while,

  • try switching off the TV to talk or play a game with your children, friends or family,

  • have lunch with a colleague,

  • visit a friend or family member who needs support or company,

  • volunteer at a local school, hospital or community group,

  • make the most of technology to stay in touch with friends and family. Video-chat apps like Skype and FaceTime are useful, especially if you live far apart. However, we should not rely on social media, texting and emailing alone to stay connected to people.

Stress Awareness Month is a great opportunity to think about your mental health and start making steps to improve it. How could you connect with someone this week?
