March 9th 2022 is No Smoking Day. This year the theme is:

“Don’t give up on giving up.

Every time you try to stop smoking, you’re a step closer to success.”

Just under 40% of smokers make a quit attempt each year. Although not all of these quit attempts succeed, each one is an opportunity to learn and should be seen as positive progress. Not only are many smokers making quit attempts, even more smokers are thinking about quitting or making changes to their habits, such as cutting down.

Most smokers do not successfully quit on their first attempt. However each successful quit starts with a serious attempt. Each time you try you are a step closer to success. Did you know getting support increases your chances of quitting?  In fact you are up to three times more likely to succeed.

There has never been a more important time look after your mental and physical health. Stopping smoking has immediate benefits to your physical health and long term will significantly reduce your chances of developing many illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, COPD, stroke and cancer. While quitting can feel stressful in the short term, research shows that once you’re past the withdrawal stage your mental health also improves. Today is the day to stop smoking.
