What is Movember?

November 1st 2021 marks the beginning of the 19th Movember. It started in Australia in 2003 with 30 men taking part and has grown to be marked in 20 countries with 6.5 million people involved in 2020.

You’ve probably heard of Movember and know it’s month when men grow a moustache to raise money for the Movember charity. But do you know what their work is all about and what they are involved in?

Men die, on average, 5 years younger than women and the causes of death are largely preventable. Globally, every minute of every day one man will commit suicide. Globally more than 1.4 million are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men.

Movember aims to reduce this and, by 2030, wants the number of premature deaths to be reduced by 25%.  This means half as many men dying from prostate and testicular cancer and half as many men suffering serious side effects from treatment. They want to help men feel mentally healthy and well, reducing the rate of male suicide by 25%.

Since 2003 Movember has funded more than 1250 projects globally including research into men’s health, changing how health services reach out to men and community projects that help men to increase their knowledge and understanding of their risk as well as how to take action to improve their health.
