Quit for Covid

Coronavirus seems to be the topic of most conversations at the moment and everyone is trying their best to ensure friends and family are staying safe, healthy and happy. This is why we wanted to tell you a little more about #QuitforCovid. This is an initiative that supports smokers to stop smoking.

As you may be aware, Coronavirus is an infectious disease that results in respiratory infection and can cause life threatening consequences. You can find more information about Coronavirus on the World Health Organisation (WHO) website

Public Health England guidance states that:

  • If you smoke, you generally have an increased risk of contracting respiratory infection and of more severe symptoms once infected. COVID-19 symptoms may, therefore, be more severe if you smoke.

  • Stopping smoking will bring immediate benefits to your health, including if you have an existing smoking-related disease. This is particularly important for both you and for our NHS at this time of intense pressure on the health service.

Although it can be hard to accept, there is clear evidence that:

  • Smoking remains the leading cause of premature death, killing nearly 80,000 people a year in England.

  • Current smokers are also 30% more likely to be admitted to hospital.

In spite of COVID-19, stopping smoking has always been an important health behaviour Live Well Stay Well have focused on. We offer 8-12 week stop smoking support over the phone. You get the 1:1 support from a Stop Smoking adviser and are able to get Champix* (the tablet to help stop smoking) or free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) which includes products such as nicotine gum, patches and lozenges.

Our Service Lead, Olivia Mosley said “It is always a good time to stop smoking but now is an especially good time to quit, as research and advice from many health professionals highlights that smoking can worsen the effects of a coronavirus.

Evidence shows that smoking reduces the body’s ability to fight an infection, and as such is a significant risk factor in all infections, including coronavirus infections.

We are as dedicated as ever to supporting the people of Bucks and our team are now working remotely in order to support our clients as safely as possible. For the time being, we are offering expert advice through weekly telephone support and we endeavour to continue to provide this service throughout this period”
