May 2020 - National Walking Month

Did you know that May 2020 is National Walking Month?

One of the great things at the moment during the UK lockdown is that we are still able to go out and exercise. Some of you will be exercising at home doing yoga, strengthening workouts or even going out running. But did you know that walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier? One of the great things is that you don’t need to walk for hours on end! A brisk-10 minute walk has so many health benefits and counts towards your recommended physical activity guidelines (150 minutes per week). For more information about physical activity guidelines, please click here.

Not only does walking improve physical health, it is a great way to clear your head and escape from the stresses of everyday life. This is why we want to provide you with as much information as possible to support you in becoming more active. There are lots of top tips for you to follow on the NHS website to help you take the first steps to walking more! As you may or may not already know, the benefits of walking include:

  • Improved heart health

  • Stronger bones and improved balance

  • Improves mood

  • Tones legs

  • Boosts energy

  • Plus much much more...

Because of all of these benefits, that’s why we want to help you become more active by walking. Live Well Stay Well can signpost to a variety of physical activity support services but there are also national campaigns running to help you!  #Try20 are challenging you to do a 20 minute walk every day in May. They have so many resources that can help you and your household get walking! There are some great top tips to get you started such as:

  • If you are working from home, try a walking meeting

  • If you have children, let them lead the way!

  • Invite your household for a walk

‚ÄčThere are so many other top tips that you can find on their website if just click here.

As mentioned before, Live Well Stay Well we are able to provide physical activity and exercise support.

If you would like to try a number of activities but don’t know what is available or where to start looking, then Active Bucks could be for you! Active Bucks is an online tool where you will just need to type in your postcode, how far you are willing to travel and you can see what is available to you! You can also claim a free voucher to try activities! Active Bucks are offering free online support whilst we are in the Coronavirus pandemic so if you would like to be active inside the home, this would be a great website to use!

Once lockdown is lifted and you are able to attend group sessions again, there is a lot that you can do to become more active such as Simply Walk which are group walks of varying ability in your local area. This is a great service to help you become more active but also increase your social circle!
